What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that uses grappling and submissions rather than striking. Jiu Jitsu isn’t about strength; it is about leverage, momentum, balance and pressure. When these skills are refined and combined with proper technique, you can overtake a much larger opponent. One can train Jiu Jitsu as a sport, for competition or tournaments, or simply to stay in shape. It can be practiced with a Gi or NoGi, and it is a part of Mixed Martial Arts.
History of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Jiu Jitsu is a Brazilian Martial Art that can be dated back to 1532 in Japan. In the 1800s, Jigoro Kano, a Jiu Jitsu practitioner from Japan, created his own version of Jiu Jitsu called Judo. Kano's belief was that the ground game was not as important as the take-down, so in the end ground fighting was phased out of Judo. It was not until 1914 that the Jiu Jitsu we know today was introduced to the world renowned Gracie family. In 1914, Esai Maeda, a student of Jigoro Kano, traveled to Brazil and started to teach Jiu Jitsu to Helio Gracie. Helio was a frail young man that was unable to do the Jiu Jitsu techniques taught by Maeda and modified them using leverage, momentum, balance, and weight transmission in order to overcome strength and speed. This was the birth of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which many practice in America today.
